- 1). Mix a cleaning and deodorizing solution with 1/2 gallon hot water and 1/2 gallon white vinegar in a bucket. Wash out empty garbage cans with the deodorizing mixture each time you remove garbage bags. This removes odor-causing dirt, debris and mildew.
- 2). Rinse the garbage cans with the hose. Set the trash cans upside-down in a well-ventilated area for an hour so excess water can drain out. Turn the cans right-side-up, in a sunny location if possible, to allow them to air-dry fully.
- 3). Sprinkle clay-based cat litter into the bottom of the dry trash can until the bottom is covered with 2 inches of litter. The litter absorbs odors from within the can. Each time you empty the garbage, discard the old cat litter and replace it with new litter after washing.
- 4). Place plastic trash bags inside the cans to prevent garbage from creating odor-causing stains on the surface of the can.
- 5). Dampen a few cotton balls with vanilla extract. Set them in the garage within a few feet of the trash area. Vanilla naturally absorbs odors while adding a pleasant fragrance to the surrounding area.
