- The appropriate tools are necessary for successful window cleaning. A professional squeegee with a replaceable high quality rubber blade should be used to remove the water/cleaning solution from the glass after it has been scrubbed. A bucket, which is large enough to fit the squeegee and mop, will be needed. A scrubbing wand or mop will be used to quickly soap the windows and will do the actual window washing. A scraper especially designed for glass will remove built-up debris. A cleaning detergent can be comprised of ordinary dish detergent. Many believe the cleaning solution is the secret to successful window cleaning. However, it is the technique, particularly the correct use of the squeegee, that is critical.
- Fill the bucket with cold water and a small portion of cleaning solution, put the clean scrubber into the bucket, wet the window and start to wash. Scrubbing the window with enough liquid so it does not dry out, start with the edges, scrubbing back and forth, up and down along each edge. Then, using small circular motions, begin scrubbing from the top working downward to the bottom of the window. One suggestion on washing a window is to start at the top and work downwards. Using vertical strokes on the inside and horizontal strokes on the outside of the window or vice versa makes it easier to find and fix any streaks.
- When scraping debris from a window, always use a professional scraper. Wet the window with the cleaning detergent and scrape in a forward motion until the debris is removed. Scrape no more than 2 or 3 inches of window area at a time. Scraping continuously across the window can leave a scratch if a sharp piece of debris should get caught in the blade.
- Properly using a squeegee is the most challenging part of window cleaning. To eliminate streaking, the proper amount of pressure and speed are necessary. This process will improve with practice. Having the window wet with soapy water, squeegee from side to side starting at the top left or right corner. After pulling to the opposite side of the window, wipe the blade completely dry. Repeat the steps until the process is completed.
- Clean and dry the edges and sills of the window, known as detailing, with a soft clean cloth. Also blot any small spots or water beads with the towel. However, if there is a substantial amount of water, streaks, or lines left on the window, the process should be repeated.
