- Capture video from your camcorder by first connecting your camcorder to your computer via firewire or USB (depending on your camcorder model). Once your camcorder is connected, click "File" from the top toolbar menu within Vegas and then select the "Capture Video" option. A box will appear asking if you would like to use the internal video capture application or an external one; select the external application to launch "Sony Video Capture" that was included with Vegas. Press the button marked "Capture Video" to capture video from where your tape is currently located, and select "Capture Tape" to capture the entire tape in your camcorder. Once Vegas has finished capturing video, a box will appear with the message "Capture Complete." In that box there will be an option to "Rename Clip"; click that button, and name your clip something you will remember. Video clips you capture will automatically be added to Vegas for editing.
- Edit clips you've captured into Vegas by setting an in and an out point on a clip and then dragging that clip onto your timeline. To set an in and out point, click on a video clip in your "batch" box of captured video. When the video gets to where you would like to set your in point, press the "I" key; when the video gets to where you want to set your out, press the "O" key. You can start and stop the video by pressing the space bar. If you need to scroll through a large amount of video at once, use your mouse to click further down on the status bar of your video (located at the bottom of the window the video is playing in) in order to advance the video quickly. Clips can be dragged and dropped on the timeline into the order you would like them to play.
- Once you're done editing video, select "File" and then "Print to Tape" in order to have Vegas play out a final version of your project. The project will automatically be recorded onto the tape in your connected camcorder. you can also export your video into a digital file by selecting "File" and "Export." Digital files can then be uploaded to the web or burned onto a DVD for sharing with others.
