How to Increase the Wireless Signal from A Router

You must have faced situations where the signal strength of the wireless connectivity between your computer and the wireless router is too low or unsatisfactory and you are wondering the reason for it. Well, there could be quite a few reasons which you can take care of and at the same time there are quite a few things that you can actually do to boost the performance. You can also consult a tech support provider to install Wifi.

1) Try to keep the router at a centralized position if possible. Keep it away from facing Steel, walls or any obstacle.

2) Check out whether it is wireless b, g or n which does makes a difference although it is not really a decisive factor for finding the root cause.

3) There is a "Db" for the antennae used by the router. Try checking that. Whether it is broadcasting at all directions or not. You can actually make a home-made antenna with aluminum foil which can increase the signal strength at a particular direction up to 12 Db.

4) It is possible that the computer is responsible for not being able to catch the signals in a proper way. You might try to use a USB network adapter for increasing the signal strength.

5) You can try to use more than one access point and then connecting both these access points with a cable.

6) You can try to use Wireless Range Extenders (repeaters) which actually pick up the signal and then amplify it for the receiving device. However the catch is that although Wireless Extenders are used the increase the signal strength; it can actually decrease performance because the connection between the router and the computer ceases to be a "direct" connection in this case.

Let us understand one thing, bandwidth and signal strength or amplitude of the signal are two different things. The clarity of the signal is related to the signal strength but bandwidth is related to the transmission capacity of the device that is the repeater. Definitely it is worth a try where the router is placed too far from the computer. There is also another device known as the bi-directional signal amplifier. The bandwidth is often dependent on the type of connection you are using as provided to you by your ISP.

Remember, it is better to make a device with an aluminum foil as discussed I mentioned in point number three than to use a device which is illegal to be used according to electronic transmission specifications and laws set down by the country. You can also check to see how much outgoing traffic is being monitored by the firewall or antivirus software in your computer. Even that might be an important factor for increasing the wireless connectivity speed.
