- 1). Plan ahead. The irony is that the system of 24 satellites launched by the U.S. military to aid in tracking troop movements, equipment positions and target locations doesn't really work that way for consumers. The device in your phone, computer or hand-held GPS unit is a wonderfully accurate receiver, but it doesn't include transmitting functionality. Until that changes, a third-party tracking service is the best option.
- 2). Find an affordable, reliable tracking service. They're inexpensive, and they can greatly increase your piece of mind. GadgetTrak is one such service, and it promises to link up to your phone, PC, Macintosh, Garmin or anything else with a GPS serial number.
- 3). Register your devices with a service, and you can feel confident that your device can be located, but getting it back is up to you. Tracking services have no law enforcement capability, and most won't even notify police when a device is found.
- 4). Protect yourself by registering your product with the manufacturer. This not only will validate your warranty, but it also will serve as your proof of purchase should that become necessary later.
- 5). Always report theft to the authorities immediately. Low-tech methods for investigating theft still exist, so give the police all the information they need.
