Windows XP Won't Restore to a Previous State

    System Tools

    • 1). Click on the desktop's "Start" button.

    • 2). Select "All Programs" from the Start menu.

    • 3). Click on the "Accessories" menu and select "System Tools."

    • 4). Choose "System Restore."

    • 5). Select "Restore my computer to an earlier time" on the Welcome to System Restore screen. Hit "Next."

    • 6). Click on a restore point in the "On this list" window. Hit "Next."

    • 7). Confirm the selection of the restore point by clicking "Next." The system will then restore the Windows XP operating system to a previous configuration and restart the computer.

    • 8). Log on to the system as the "Administrator" and the "System Restore Restoration Complete" screen will be displayed. Hit "OK."

    Safe Mode

    • 1). Power off the computer. Restart the computer and hold down the "F8" key until the computer enters "Safe Mode."

    • 2). Press the up and down arrow keys to select "Safe mode with a Command prompt." You may then be prompted to select an operating system, select Windows XP with the up and down arrow keys and then hit "Enter."

    • 3). Log on as the system administrator. Enter the system administrator username and password if required.

    • 4). Type "%systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe" (no quotes) in the command prompt line. Hit the "Enter" key. The system will then restore. Follow any additional onscreen prompts.

    Safe Mode with Additional Options

    • 1). Restart the computer and press the "F8" key until the "Safe Mode" screen appears.

    • 2). Select a preferred option on the "Windows Advanced" screen and hit "Enter."

    • 3). Select "Last Known Configuration" and hit "Enter." The Boot menu reappears with the words "Safe Mode" at the bottom of the screen.
