- 1). Remove all furniture and inspect the walls, paying close attention to the corners. Mold can manifest itself on walls as small greenish, brown, or even black dots.
- 2). Smell your carpet. It may sound a little strange, but because carpet features loops and padding that mold can hide in, it can be difficult to detect visually.
- 3). Look in areas below ventilation shafts. Older ventilation systems can produce moisture, which can lead to mold growth in areas near vents.
- 4). Inspect tiled areas, paying particular attention to grout. Tiled areas that are heavy moisture traffic areas, like kitchens and bathrooms, can be breeding grounds for mold, and grout lines are convenient areas for mold to thrive. Look for areas that are discolored in any way from the rest of the tile and grout.
- 5). Swab any areas you suspect as being contaminated with mold with a cotton swab and then use a home mold test kit according to the manufacturer's directions to see if it's indeed mold.
