- 1). Install a SSH server on your system and create the users that will be able to connect to the server.
- 2). Open port 22 on your firewall so that your client can connect to the server from the internet.
- 3). Download and install a SSH client for your computer. SSH is cross-platform and a windows client can connect to a Unix client and vice versa.
- 1). Install a VNC server on your dedicated server. Create users and strong password or setup the VNC server to use NIS/NIS+ (Network Information Service on Unix/Linux) or an Active Directory (Authentication system for windows).
- 2). Open port 5900 on your firewall so you can connect from the Internet. If you are using a JAVA VNC client, you will have to open port 5800 as well.
- 3). Download and install a VNC client. While VNC is an open standard, some clients/server implement additional functions. If you want to use those functions, you will need to use a matched client/server.
- 1). Connect to the KVM over the IP to your dedicated server's mouse, keyboard, and video port. The KVM over IP box will allow you to connect to it and access the server even if it does not have access to the internet.
- 2). Set up the login and password to the KVM console specifically. Use your server credentials to log into the server.
- 3). Connect to the KVM with the login and password you created and use the server credential to login to your dedicated server. Think of the KVM as a secure room where your server is located. You need to enter your credentials to get in the room. From there, you can login to your server normally.
