Where Does the Bone in Bone China Come From?

    Production

    • Bone china is a form of porcelain china and is considered one of the finest porcelain products available. Bone china takes a four-step process in order to produce it:
      Making the clay
      Making the china mold
      Glazing the china
      Adding decoration

    Materials

    • Bone china is considered one of the finest types of china, both because of its appearance as well as its durability. The addition of bone is what differentiates it from other porcelain forms. Bone china is truly made of bones: tissue is removed from animal bones, and then the remaining bones are heated at temperatures reaching nearly 1000 degrees Celsius. This temperature sterilizes the bone, making it safe for use in china. The ash is then crushed and mixed with water, then added to a porcelain mixture that also contains kaolin and petuntse, two ingredients used in making clay. The average bone china plate contains about 50 percent animal bone.

    Identifying Bone China

    • Not only is bone china resilient, it is also intensely white. If china is indeed bone china, a person should be able to hold it up to a light, and see the light through the plate.
