- To install the MagicJack, plug the device into an available USB port on your computer. A screen will appear as the device downloads any necessary updates before finally loading. After registering, you will receive your phone number and be able to make and receive phone calls. On one end of the device is an RJ-11 phone jack where you can plug in a standard phone. When it rings, answer it like you would a normal land-line phone call by picking up the handset.
The computer must be powered on in order for the device to work. If you want to turn your computer off and still receive calls, you can configure your call settings at MagicJack.com to forward your calls to another phone.
You can also use a headset with your MagicJack instead of a traditional phone. Follow the directions for installing the headset on your computer, then click the "Menu" button on your MagicJack window. The first option available will be "Switch to Headset."
While using a headset, you will answer and end calls differently than with a traditional phone handset. When a call is received, a window will appear with the caller ID and the options to answer or ignore the call. To make a phone call using the headset, use the keypad on the MagicJack interface and click the green "Send" button, or click on any number you have stored in the Contacts section of the window. Double-clicking on one of these numbers initiates the dialing sequence.
There are redial, voice mail and Google 411 buttons on the MagicJack interface. Click these buttons as needed to access these features, or access them manually on a traditional phone if desired. - Effective early 2010, MagicJack works on Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7 and Mac OS X. Linux support is in development. The device works best on a well-maintained computer. Avoid running memory- or bandwidth-intensive programs while using it, to help with call quality.
Take the device with you while traveling and use your phone on a computer equipped with a high-speed Internet connection. Plug the MagicJack into a computer, and the software will install automatically. If you use it on a laptop, you can make and receive phone calls using Wi-Fi hot spots when available.
A MagicJack registered in the United States can be used worldwide if there is a high-speed Internet connection available. If you have family or friends in other countries, it may enable you to call them without incurring international phone charges. If this is not an option, you can enable it to make international phone calls by creating a prepay account.
