- 1). Place the wireless router away from walls and off the floor. Walls create obstructions for the wireless signal, weakening its strength to the computer. Putting the wireless router in the most central position possible will provide the best line of sight between router and computer, increasing signal strength.
- 2). Experiment with different channel settings for the router. Wireless routers can be set to any of 11 channels to broadcast the wireless signal. Trying a different channel may give better results depending on what type of electronic interference is present at the wireless location.
- 3). Download the latest firmware for the router and drivers for the wireless adaptor. As manufactures make improvements to device firmware and drivers, signal strength is often improved.
- 4). Remove potential sources of signal interference. Other wireless items, including cordless phones, can degrade the signal quality of a wireless network. Using phones and other wireless devices that operate on the 900 MHz or 5.8 GHz frequencies will remove the potential for interference.
