- Silicone is the most durable caulk for outdoor use, especially in cold climates. This type of caulk will not shrink, dry out, or crack. After silicone caulk has dried, it remains soft and flexible. When temperatures change, areas around doors and windows can expand and contract. Silicone's flexibility allows it to maintain its seal. The negative side is silicone caulk must be cleaned off tools and you with paint thinner or mineral spirits.
- Acrylic latex silicone is also another strong caulk that can withstand temperature changes. This type of caulk is favored not only for its durability, but for its ease of cleanup. Like silicone caulk, it can be used on the interior or exterior of your home, and will last up to 25 years.
- Latex caulk is best used for indoor applications, especially in cold climates. This caulk will not hold up to cold weather or rapid temperature changes. Latex caulks shrink after application and will often need to be reapplied to completely fill gaps. In cold weather, it does not necessarily shrink as much as it has the tendency to crack or break. Latex caulks become hard and brittle over time and will not expand with the movement in homes during temperature changes.
