- 1). Type your monogram into a word processing program. A monogram can be a single letter, capitalized or lower case. A monogram can also have three letters, one for each initial. For an individual named Jane R. Smith, a three-lettered monogram would read JSR, with the S being larger than the other two letters. For a married couple named Kate and Mark Jones, the monogram would read KJM. The bride's first initial comes first, the initial of their joint last name goes in the middle and is larger than the other two letters, and the groom's first initial goes last.
- 2). Experiment with different fonts. For a classic look, use a traditional font, such as Times New Roman. For children, try a font that looks like printed handwriting. Script fonts work well for a more feminine look. Block letters are more masculine.
- 3). Experiment with the size, enlarging and reducing the letters. You may need to print out several different versions of your monogram in order to determine the correct size. It's important to experiment with the size after you have settled on a font because different fonts have different sizes.
- 4). Save your file and print it out. If you plan on laying the copy on top of something else or if you plan to make a stencil of the monogram, print the file on a transparency. Transparencies are great for making stencils because ink won't bleed through them, even after heavy usage.
