A light Emitting Diode is simply an LED which is widely used in lighting purposes. The life span of LED bulbs and tubes is comparatively longer than the fluorescent bulbs or other conventional lighting sources. The conventional lamps emit white light whereas the LED lamps emit colored light depending on the band gap of the semiconductor material in it. LED lights are available in different forms such as LED spotlight, LED down light, LED tube. LED ceiling light and LED flood light.
LED spotlight
A LED spotlight is manufactured in such as a way so as to easily replace a conventional spothght. Usually it is capable of replacing a higher wattage conventional light than its own specification. For example, a 16W LED spotlight can emit the same amount of light similar to a 150W halogen lamp. They often have directional light characteristics and offer a lifespan of about 60,000 hours. However if operated at higher temperatures than specified the lifespan is tend to reduce.
LED tube
A LED tube is manufactured in such a way so as to easily replace a fluorescent tube physically. Some of the existing fixtures can be made a drop-in replacement, while the others require a change in the wiring of the existing fixture as the ballast has to be removed. Usually a LED tube uses many LED lamps and can emit directional light too.
LED flood light
A LED flood light is capable of providing illumination across a considerably wide area. Powerful projectors are used to obtain this type of lighting. This type of lighting is usually employed in sporting venues, in the decoration of buildings, stage lighting purposes, advertisement boards, airports and any kind of public places. They are manufactured in two ways such as indoor-compact and outdoor-compact. The indoor-compact lights are used for home lighting purposes while the outdoor-compact bulbs are used in public places.
LED down light
A LED down light is used widely as an alternative to incandescent light bulbs for both indoor and outdoor purposes. They have a light fixture enabling them to be installed in a hole in the ceiling and hence the name ‘down light'. They are otherwise called as ‘pot lights' or ‘recessed lights'. From the ceiling, they can illuminate an entire hail or room, or can illuminate a small area by narrowing the beam of light.
