- 1). Examine your pet to make sure the problem is fleas. Pull back the fur to look for evidence of fleas, such as flea dirt or the fleas themselves. Flea dirt looks like little black flecks, and is actually the feces from the fleas.
- 2). Give your pet a bath, using herbal shampoo which contains any of the following herbs: lavender, citronella, geranium, pine cedar, eucalyptus, or juniper. A combination of some of these would be great. When treating a pet with fleas to a bath intended to kill the fleas, you will want to start at the top, and work your way down. Fleas begin moving up as they sense water, so washing the head first, carefully so you don't get any shampoo in your pet's eyes. Lather well, and let the shampoo stay on the pet for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse well and towel your pet dry.
- 3). Prevent flea infestations and treat recently infected pets with the addition of garlic to the diet. Garlic is a natural flea repellent and will help keep them away. You could also give your pet sulfur once a week to add to the protection.
- 4). Vacuum your house daily, the furniture and the carpets, making sure that you dispose of the vacuum bag. Fleas can jump right back out and into your home if the bag is left in the vacuum. It is best to get it right out of the house.
- 5). Spray apple cider vinegar around the floor edges of your home. This is also a great odor eater, and the smell of the vinegar will fade very quickly.
