Deep Tissue Gum Cleaning

    Benefits

    • A deep tissue gum cleaning is beneficial for everyone because it cuts down on plaque and other buildup that causes gum disease and tooth loss. Regular cleanings help the gums to remain healthy and repair tissue if necessary through restoration and cleaning.

To maintain the highest levels of dental health, patients should have their teeth and gums cleaned at least every three months by a general dentist, periodontist or dental hygienist.

    Procedure

    • There are usually three steps to a deep tissue gum cleaning: scaling, polishing and curettage. Curettage is the removal of soft tissue lining in the periodontal pockets that harbor bacteria or presently damaged tissue. For many individuals, this step is not necessary, and a simple scaling and polishing procedure is sufficient.

Dentists observe the gums for calculus, which is calcified plaque, also known as tartar. If present, the dentist will remove buildup with an ultrasonic instrument and remove tartar with a water spray. Then, scaling is used to scrape away plaque from the gum, both above and below the line. These two methods are efficient in removing plaque and buildup, since they are hardened and fracture easily.

Next, the hygienist will smooth the teeth, which also helps to remove bacteria and create a clean surface for the gums to reattach. Finally, polishing is done to remove any remaining plaque or stains from the teeth, as well as smoothing them to reduce chances of future plaque buildup.

    At-Home Cleaning

    • Home care is important to reduce buildup of tartar and plaque between cleanings. Brushing the teeth twice a day, especially after meals cuts down on bacteria or plaque building up, both of which cause decay. Using toothpaste and mouthwash cut down on bacteria and gingivitis, and floss is effective in removing tartar and plaque buildup between the teeth.
