Infrared Cameras in Law Enforcement

An infrared camera aka thermographic camera takes pictures just like any ordinary camera, but in terms of temperature variations. While normal cameras see the light frequencies falling into the visible spectrum, the IR cameras have special sensors that capture the heat wave frequencies and display a thermal profile of any object in sight. This temperature difference between the surroundings and the person makes the "thermal profile" of the scene. A hot/ warm object is usually displayed as white, but can be chosen to be displayed black as well.

One of its innumerable applications that greatly changed the world is in the law enforcement field. The security forces are now armed with infrared cameras and devices that enable them vision during night or when visibility is hampered because of induced conditions like smoke.

As to why so much uproar about this camera, it's because of the following reasons:

€ It lets them see in complete darkness.

€ It allows them to see through camouflage in daytime or night.

€ It can capture clear images of the scene even through fog, smoke or dust.

€ The range of an IR camera is much farther than ordinary night-vision goggles, hence offering better sight.

The features of this camera make it a prized possession of any law enforcement officer. There is no limit to the ways it can be used to his advantage! If a fugitive/criminal is hiding in a dark place, the camera would easily pick his thermal profile and give away his position. Since it needs no light flash, the fugitive wouldn't even know that he has been clicked. Besides, it can easily detect if he is hiding any weapon inside his clothes. This is because, of course, the human body would be warmer than the metal of the weapon.

Infrared equipment are invaluable in crime scene inspection. If the crime was recent, chances are some objects retained the body heat of the criminal. The camera would easily pick up such evidences from a crowded room.

These are also excellent surveillance tools. Whether in bank safes or the perimeter of a guarded building, these cameras provide a better alternative to deploying guards at multiple points by detecting and tracking anyone present there and hiding.

One major breakthrough in this application has been the prediction of criminal behavior where the IR camera captures small, unusual heat changes in the surroundings over a period of time and creates an IR image. Any irregularity that gives rise to suspicion is thoroughly checked and eliminated. This even enables the security forces to avoid a crime even before it has been committed!
