- Building a bird cage has the advantage of being distinctively cheaper than purchasing one in a store. It also allows you the freedom of creativity and the option of customizing it for your preferences. You can give it as many doors as you like or attach legs to it if you don't want to hang it from your ceiling. If you'd like for the birds to nest in the cage, you can also leave extra room for that.
One easy way to create a bird cage is to make one with just wire. Bend the wire to create a box or dome shape. The easiest way to form the shape would be to fold the wire over a cardboard box and remove it once the shape has been created. If your wire doesn't bend or you'd like to do it another way, you can cut the wire into six equal square pieces and use cage clips or strong ties to create the cage. Then put together and attach with electrical ties or cage clips. Make sure to cut an opening for the birds to get into the cage. You can also attach a wire door by using the same square piece of wire that you cut out for the door opening and reattach one side with cage clips. - Another option is to make a wooden frame with the materials you've just gathered and attach wire to every side of it very carefully using a staple gun. Make sure that the wood is natural and untreated, because treated wood could have chemicals on it that are harmful to the birds. Now take the 1 x 2 feet or smaller wood and carefully glue or nail it together into a box that is as large as you like, with one side open for the birds to come and go. Next you'll need to attach some wire to the outside. The wire should be small enough that the bird won't get accidentally tangled in it, but not so small that you won't be able to add bird perches or other customizations. You should also remember to clean the wire before attaching it to the bird cage.
You have the option of cutting out four wire squares that fit the top and bottom of the frame and the four sides, or just wrapping the wire around the wood frame. Staple the wire to the wood, but make sure to cut out out openings where you'd like the door to be and attach a wire door with cage clips.
