A Tutorial on the Garmin GPSMAP 478

    Initialize Your GPS

    • 1). Slide the antenna to the up position. It is located on the back of the device and slides up in an arc. Point the unit toward the sky in a place where there are no obstructions, such as trees or tall buildings.

    • 2). Turn on your GPSMAP 478 by pressing the power button and holding it in for a second or two. A tone will sound when it powers on.

    • 3). Tap "Enter" on the warning page after reading the warning. Pressing "Enter" means you agree with the disclaimer.

    • 4). Continue pointing the unit toward the sky as it acquires satellite signals. It will say "Acquiring Satellites." When the message is replaced by signal strength, you have completed initializing the unit.

    • 5). Turn the GPS unit off by pressing the "Power" button and holding it for a second or two.

    Using The Main Menu

    • 1). Tap "Menu" twice while viewing any page to open the main menu.

    • 2). Press the up or down arrows on the rocker button to scroll through items on the page. The item you stop on is highlighted. The tabs on the main menu page include: GPS, weather, XM (radio stations), route, track (to record and save tracks), points (store waypoints), DSC (digital select calling), sonar, alarms, calendar, celestial (tide, hunting & fishing, sun & moon info), message, display, sound and setup.

    • 3). Highlight the tab you want. When an item is highlighted, the information for it appears on the screen to the right. Press the left arrow or right arrow on the rocker button to highlight subtabs, and then press the up and down arrows to select individual fields.

    • 4). Press the "Enter" button to select the highlighted tab. The "Enter" button is to the left and slightly below the rocker button.

Create A Route Using The Map

    • 1). Highlight "Route" from the main menu page and then press "Menu."

    • 2). Select "New Route" by highlighting it and then press "Enter."

    • 3). Press "Menu." The options menu will open.

    • 4). Select "Edit on the Map." Press "Enter."

    • 5). Locate the point on the map to which you want to create a route and highlight it. Press "Enter." You may add additional points on the route by repeating steps four and five.
