How to Fish in Topsail Island, NC

    Pier Fishing

    • 1). Determine which part of the Island you want to fish. There are three fishing piers on the island, Seaview in North Topsail Beach, Surf City Ocean Pier in Surf City and the Jolly Roger in Topsail Beach. The same species of fish can be caught from each pier, including kingfish.

    • 2). Purchase a pass. Depending on how often you plan to visit, each pier offers season passes as well as day passes. The purchase of a pass includes a blanket license for all fishing on the pier, so a separate North Carolina fishing license is not required.

    • 3). Abide by all state fishing regulations. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission sets limits for the number and size of fish that can be caught by each fisherman. The staff at each Topsail Island pier will be able to guide you on limits and other regulations.

    Charter Fishing

    • 1). Decide on the type of fishing you want to do. Many Topsail charters offer inland fishing along the creeks and waterways, fishing in the sounds and inlets and offshore fishing in the Atlantic Ocean. Most local charters employ a variety of fishing techniques, including fly fishing, trolling and night fishing.

    • 2). Choose a charter company. Several local charter companies provide fishing services in the waters in and around Topsail Island. Prices vary based on the duration of the trip and the number of fisherman. Most charters include a blanket fishing license in the price of the charter, if not, one can be obtained from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission.

    • 3). Learn and abide by all state fishing regulations. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission sets limits for the number and size of fish that can be caught by each fisherman. The captain of the charter will be able to advise you of limits and other regulations.

    Surf Fishing

    • 1). Obtain a North Carolina saltwater fishing license. Licenses are required for all individuals over the age of 16 fishing in coastal waters in North Carolina. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission issues licenses online.

    • 2). Confirm that the beach you are visiting allows surf fishing. Unless otherwise posted, the majority of beaches on Topsail Island allow surf fishing.

    • 3). Abide by all state fishing regulations. The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission sets limits for the number and size of fish that can be caught by each fisherman. The staff at local bait shops or fishing piers can help advise you of these rules.
