- 1). Place an O'Shaughnessy hook with molded jig head in the jaws of a fly tying vise. Choose a hook with molded jig head with a collar designed for tying, rather than rubber skirts or plastic lures.
- 2). Wrap several turns of cotton thread around the collar of the molded lead jig head. Wrap the thread along the collar to form a base for tying on deer hairs.
- 3). Cut a clump of deer hair with a pair of scissors. Hold the clump tightly and trim the cut end flush.
- 4). Place the deer hair on top of the lead head shoulder. Arrange the hairs so they cover the top and sides of the shoulder. Tie the hairs in place with several turns of the thread.
- 5). Cut another clump of hairs, trim the end and place on the bottom of the lead head shoulder. Arrange the hairs so they meet flush with the hairs already tied in place. Secure the hairs with several turns of thread.
- 6). Finish the bucktail saltwater jig with several turns of the cotton thread around the collar. Tie the thread off and cut the line free from the spool with scissors. Shape the ends of the deer hair lightly with the scissors without removing too much of the hair.
- 7). Apply a coat of clear nail polish to the wrapped threads to seal the thread and help protect the threads from abrasion.
