- 1). Place a length of 1-inch by 2-inch lumber on a sturdy work surface. Determine the number of rods and reels you want to store and allow 6 to 8 inches of space for each rod and reel when positioned on the rack. For illustration this rack will be built for three rods.
- 2). Measure the 1-inch by 2-inch lumber with a tape measure so that you have two lengths that are 3 feet long. Cut the wood with a fine tooth wood saw.
- 3). Measure one of the 3 foot lengths with the tape measure and mark the following points: 1 inch from the top, 4 inches from the top, 12 inches from the top (middle), 4 inches from the bottom and 1 inch from the bottom. Mark the second piece of lumber at the same points.
- 4). Insert a bit into the drill that is just slightly smaller than the L screws you will be using. Drill a hole at the points previously marked on both 1-inch by 2-inch lengths of wood.
- 5). Thread an L screw into the holes that are 1-inch from the ends and in the middle. The holes that are 4-inches from the ends will be used to mount the racks to the wall. Turn the L screws until they are securely in place and the L, or end of the screw, is pointing up.
- 6). Locate two support studs in the wall where the rack will be mounted. Insert wood screws into the holes that are 4-inches from both ends of the 1-inch by 2-inch strips. Measure up from the floor with a tape measure to determine the mounting height for the rack and mark a point for both racks with a pencil.
- 7). Place a rack on the wall so the bottom of the wood strip is on the marked point. Hold the rack tightly against the wall and drive the wood screws into the studs with a screw driver. Repeat the mounting process with the second wood strip.
