- 1). Cut a 2-foot length off the 2-inch-by-4-inch board and clamp it to the bottom of the 2-inch-by-10-inch backboard. Drill three holes -- one every 6 inches -- through the board and backboard. Put a washer on each of three bolts and slide them through the holes. Add washers and nuts to the backsides of the bolts of the backboard, and squeeze the board to the backboard by tightening the bolts with pipe and socket wrenches. This is the finger grip.
- 2). Cut another 2-foot section off of the 2-inch-by-4-inch board. On this second piece, 3 inches in from each end, on the same side of the board, cut widthwise into the center of the board, 1.5 inches. This gives the board two notches on the same side, 18 inches apart. Saw the board lengthwise, from one notch to the other, with a jigsaw. This leaves you with a board with a leg on each end. Place the board on the backboard, spanning across the middle. Clamp it down.
- 3). Drill holes through the center of each leg and the backboard. Drill two more holes in the middle of the board -- equally spaced between one another and the outside bolts -- 1/2 inch above the jigsaw cut. Slide bolts with washers into each hole and add washers and nuts to them behind the backboard. Tighten the boards to squeeze them together.
- 4). Place a soda can on the last section of the 2-inch-by-4-inch board. Trace around the bottom to make a circle. Trace a second circle 2 inches from the first one. Draw two parallel lines to connect the circles. The resulting effect is an oval. Cut out the oval with the jigsaw and make three more of equal size.
- 5). Clamp the four ovals onto the backboard, spaced evenly across the remaining area. Set two on diagonals and two either vertical or horizontal. Drill two holes through each oval and though the backboard behind them. Put washers on the bolts, slide them through the holes and backboard, and put washers and nuts on the backs and tighten them.
