- 1). Turn the reel handle and note the direction in which the spool turns. If it turns clockwise, place the spool of line on the ground so the line comes off it in a clockwise direction. If the reel spool turns counterclockwise, the line should also come off the spool in a counterclockwise direction.
- 2). Insert the end of the line through the last guide at the end of the rod, then thread the line through each line guide.
- 3). Open the bale of the spinning reel by flipping it up.
- 4). Wrap the line around the reel spool two times. Tie an overhand knot -- as if you were tying a knot in your shoelaces -- so the line you wrapped is tight on the spool. Snip extra line above the knot.
- 5). Flip the bale down.
- 6). Reel with one hand. With the thumb and forefinger of your other hand, grasp the line just before it enters the reel. Do not hold it so tight that you cannot reel, but maintain pressure on the line so it goes onto the reel tight.
- 7). Turn the reel handle until the line is within 1/4 inch from the top of the spool.
- 8). Cut the line with a scissors so that 1 foot hangs from the end of the rod.
