Fishing for Flathead Catfish with a Pole

    • 1). Fish near brush piles, tailraces, or logjams during the day. Flathead catfish hunt for food at the surface or in shallow water at night.

    • 2). Rig your rod with at least a 240-lb. test fishing line. Flatheads will give you a fight when you manage to catch one, and this type line gives you more power to reel them in.

    • 3). Tie on a stainless steel hook, preferably a size 7/0 or an 8/0, according to the Missouri Conservationist website.

    • 4). Add a sinker so that you can fish on or near the bottom of the river, unless you are night-fishing.

    • 5). Bait your hook with live or freshly cut fish for the best chance of nabbing one of these strong fighters.
