How to Repair a Nakamichi Tape Deck

    • 1). Unplug the Nakamichi tape deck from the wall, and disconnect all audio cabling connecting your tape deck to other audio components like a receiver, amplifier and speakers.

    • 2). Move the tape deck to a place where you can easily access all parts of the machine. A padded workbench or flat, steady surface like a table covered with a soft cloth works well to keep the machine from being scratched or damaged during repair.

    • 3). Disconnect the detachable power cable from the back of the tape deck by gently pulling the cable straight out.

    • 4). Test the output prongs on the end of the power cable with a voltmeter. All voltmeters work differently, so check your owner's manual for proper procedure on testing the output of a power cable.

    • 5). Test the power contacts on the inside of the tape deck with a voltmeter. This is a different procedure than testing the prongs on the end of the power cable. Check your owners manual if you don't know how to get a correct reading.

    • 6). Replace any faulty audio cable with the same type of cable. If you are unsure what kind of cable you are replacing, take the cable to an electronics supply shop and ask a professional for help. Using the wrong type of cable could damage your tape deck, or simply not provide adequate power to operate the deck.
