- Launch the Settings app on your iPhone and tap the "Mail, Contacts, Calendars" button. Tap "Add Account" and select "Microsoft Exchange." Enter your Google account's information in the "Email" and "Username" fields, then tap "Next." Tap the "Cancel" button in the dialog box and type "m.google.com" into the new "Server" box. Slide the "Contacts," "Mail" and "Calendar" switches to "On" and tap "Done." This syncs your iPhone's native applications with your online Google account.
- Click the "Tools" menu in Thunderbird and select "Add-ons." Search for an add-on called "Provider for Google" in the "Add-ons" tab, and click the "Install" button next to the extension's entry in the search results. Click the "Options" button and enter your Google account credentials in the relevant boxes. Click the "OK" button to save the details. Click the "Restart Thunderbird" button when prompted by Thunderbird, to relaunch the client and allow the extension to run. Once restarted, Thunderbird is synced with your online Google account.
- Once the iPhone and Thunderbird have been synced with Google using their individual methods, Google automatically propagates any additions, edits or changes across the account. Making a change on the iPhone is reflected in your Google account automatically, and the changes are then transferred to Thunderbird. This process also works in reverse, and you can makes changes and edits directly to your Google account from any computer's Web browser. The benefit of using this synchronization method is that it takes place automatically and wirelessly, whenever a synced app is launched on the iPhone or whenever you run Thunderbird on your Ubuntu machine.
- Setting both your iPhone and Thunderbird on your Ubuntu computer to use IMAP email, rather than POP email, is the best way to sync email on your devices. IMAP leaves all your messages on the email server, rather than downloading them to whichever device checks the account first. Therefore, once you've read an email on the iPhone, it syncs with the online server and shows as having been read in Thunderbird, too. If you delete and email in Thunderbird, it is also deleted from the iPhone's email list. Check with your Internet provider for details on whether the IMAP email service is available.
