- 1). Connect your iPod to your computer with the USB cord that came with your portable music device. Make sure your iPod is turned on; otherwise, it won't be recognized by your computer.
- 2). Open the iTunes program on your computer. If you don't have iTunes installed, you'll need to download it from the iTunes website and install it on your computer before you back up and restore your iPod.
- 3). Right click on the name of your iPod, which should be listed under the "Devices" heading on the left side of the screen. Select "back up" from the drop-down menu. This initiates a backup of all the music, applications, videos and other data that is currently stored on your device.
- 4). Click on the "Restore" button on the "Summary" tab of your iPod's settings menu. When your device is selected in the left column of the screen, this menu will appear in the iTunes window.
- 5). Confirm that you want to restore your iPod to its factory settings. After the restoration process is complete, you'll be prompted to select a backup date. Select the most recent backup from the list to restore all your device's music, applications and settings.
