San Francisco Opera’s costume sale in the spring of 2014 was a rarity (only the fifth such sale in the company’s 91-year history) and a smash hit. But if you missed that, you now have another chance at getting your own piece of the Opera, at its piano sale on July 24-27, 2014.
Pianos used during the opera company’s past season are on sale at what San Francisco Opera calls “substantial savings.” They include Yahama grand pianos and uprights, Clavinova digital pianos and Disklavier Player pianos.
Although we laypeople are likely to associate only concert grands with opera, a major company like San Francisco’s needs a variety of pianos for its activities. There are not just the grand performances in the War Memorial Opera House that we see and hear, but also rehearsals for soloists and choruses, recitals, auditions, staging rehearsals, individualized coaching of vocalists and singers’ warm-ups in the dressing room. The Clavinova is able to reproduce the sounds of a classic orchestra, including harpsichords and string and brass instruments. It and the Disklavier can do multi-track recording, which is useful for working through compositions and practicing roles.
Yamaha provided the season’s pianos to San Francisco Opera. It has long been a provider to New York's Metropolitan Opera as well.
The sale is at Music Exchange, a Yamaha dealer on Van Ness Avenue, four blocks away from War Memorial. In addition to the Opera’s used inventory, new Yamaha, handcrafted Bösendorfer, vintage and almost new Steinway & Sons, Kawai, Schimmel and other pianos are also for sale.
Piano experts and Opera officials will be on site to help customers. Although San Francisco Opera does not receive a portion of the sales proceeds, the sale supports its partnership with Yamaha and Music Exchange.
July 24-26 (Thursday, Friday and Saturday) are considered “private” sale days (and will have the best selection); call (415) 351-1100, the Opera piano sale line, to reserve your entrance to the sale on any of those days. The sale is open to the general public on July 27, from 12 pm to 5 pm.
An Opera footnote:Merola Opera Program, San Francisco Opera’s well-regarded training course whose alumni include Joyce DiDonato, Deborah Voigt and Patricia Racette, is offering an insider’s view of its production of Don Giovanni. Merola’s executive director and Don Giovanni’s music director and director will talk about the summer production. The event also features a free drawing for tickets to the Mozart opera. Opera Prelude talk, July 30, at 7 pm. Books Inc. Opera Plaza, 601 Van Ness Ave., San Francisco. Free admission.
