The SS Willis B. Boyer Museum, in downtown Toledo Ohio, opened in 1987 allowing visitors to experience the fully restored ship first launched in 1911 as the "World's Largest Bulk Freighter" setting records for iron ore, coal and rye cargoes. A trip to the museum allows visitors to walk aboard the ship to see a glimpse of maritime life nearly 100 years ago
History:
The SS Willis B. Boyer was originally christened the "Colonel James M.
Schoonmaker" for its maiden voyage on July 1, 1911 in Ecorse, Michigan where it was built.
The "Col. James M. Schoonmaker" was known early on as the "World's Largest Bulk Freighter" and "Queen of the Lakes," a title that it held until April 14, 1914. On those historic trips, the "Schoonmaker" set records for iron ore, coal, and rye cargoes.
Besides its size and strength, the "Schoonmaker" was known for its elegance. The ship provided accommodations for passengers that were compared to those of the grand ocean liners, the "Lusitania" and the "Olympic."
Through the years, the "Schoonmaker" was part of the Shenango Furnace Company, Wilson Marine Transit Company, the Interlake Steamship Company, the Republic Steel Corporation (who renamed her the "SS Willis B. Boyer" after the company President and CEO), and the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Company.
In 1986, the ship was purchased by the City of Toledo to use as a museum and opened to the public in 1987.
Ship Namesakes:
- Colonel James M. Schoonmaker (1842-1927), Civil War Hero
