- 1). Get a job as a framing carpenter's helper. Learn how to frame by assisting the carpenter throughout a two-year period of on-the-job training.
- 2). Get a job as a framing carpenter at a remodeling company. Perform your duties while assisting the trim carpenter whenever possible for at least three years.
- 3). Apply to work on the trim carpentry crew at your company. Start by working on the saws. A table saw and chop saw make the precision cuts necessary for proper trim installation. Perfect your technique on this equipment.
- 4). Work your way up into the position of trim carpenter. Work in this position for at least two years to gain the experience needed to strike out on your own.
- 5). Apply with your state's contractor board for the proper license. Take the trim and finish carpentry test through the contractor's board and pay the necessary fees to obtain your contractor's license in this field.
- 6). Visit your county clerk's office to purchase a business license. Meet with your insurance agent to purchase a liability policy to cover your company in case of accidental injury or damage.
