- 1). Wash the vehicle thoroughly with a mixture of liquid dish detergent and water. Rinse the soap from the vehicle. Dry the vehicle with a chamois.
- 2). Divide the car's surface into zones. These are the hood, the front quarter panels, the doors, the rear quarter panels, the trunk and the top. Work in one zone, on one side of the car at a time.
- 3). Cover the edges of painted areas, such as those where the lights, trim, windshield and rear window attach to the body of the vehicle with detailing tape, to avoid damaging the paint in these sensitive areas.
- 4). Dip a clean cloth in a can of heavy-duty polishing compound. Wipe the polishing compound onto the surface of a single zone of the car, using overlapping circles to ensure the surface is covered with polishing compound.
- 5). Place a clean, wool buffer pad onto a random orbital buffer. Do not allow the polishing compound to dry on the surface. Buff the car with slow, overlapping strokes of the electric buffer, continuing to buff until the surface is mirror-like.
- 6). Remove the detailing tape from the car. Place a small quantity of polishing compound on a clean cloth. Apply the polishing compound to each of those areas, one area at a time. Polish these areas by hand, until their surfaces shine.
- 7). Apply a coat of paste wax to the entire car. Allow the wax to dry to a powder and buff the wax to a high shine, using the buffer and the softest buffing pad available.
