- 1). Connect your iPod to the computer using the USB cable. This should automatically boot the iTunes program, allowing you to view what you have uploaded onto the device. Here, you can sort through what you want to keep or get rid of. In the Summary, you can see exactly how much space is being used on your iPod for music, photos and video files (by MB).
- 2). Sort through your music library. Most of us add music on a regular basis without thinking about how much space it takes up and how much is being used. Chances are you have a few albums or artists on your iPod that you don't listen to anymore.
- 3). Review your photos. Instead of keeping all your albums on your iPod, consider leaving a few favorites on it and taking out the rest. Photos can take up a lot of space based on size and pixels alone.
- 4). Look through your video library, if you are using a video-capable iPod. Like photos, videos can eat up a lot of memory fast due to their size. If you have an iPod Touch, consider canning some applications that you hardly use. Even if you decide you want them back later, iTunes will recognized that you've already purchased an app and allow you to re-download it on a later date.
- 5). Click on any file on your device in iTunes to highlight and select it. Press the Delete key. iTunes will ask you to confirm that you want to remove the file from the iPod. After verifying this move, the file will be deleted. When deleting a file from your iTunes library, the program will ask you whether you would like to move it to the trash, or simply remove it from the collection.
- 6). Turn off automatic syncing. To keep your iPod clean and organized, your best bet is to manually control what is uploaded onto it. The iTunes program will automatically upload to your iPod any changes you've made to files on your computer unless you turn off this feature.
