- 1). Open a window to allow the room to air out, get everyone out of the room and keep them out for at least 15 minutes. If you have a forced air heating or cooling system, shut it off for a half hour or so to prevent the mercury vapor from spreading throughout your home.
- 2). Put on rubber gloves and pick up the larger pieces of glass from the bulb and put them into your glass jar. Next, scoop up any small glass fragments and powder from the light bulb using a piece of cardboard and drop them into the jar.
- 3). Wrap a strip of duct tape around your hand so you can pat down on the floor and pick up any tiny glass fragments remaining on the ground; then use a damp paper towel or wet wipe to finish cleaning the area of fragments.
- 4). Put your cleanup supplies into your bottle or bag, seal it tightly, then place it in your trash for regular pickup.
- 5). Wash your hands thoroughly after disposing of the broken bulb.
