- 1). Select fine grit sand paper in the color of your choice. The paper often comes in shades of brown, black, or blue. Tape the paper onto a rigid cardboard surface so it is smooth and taut.
- 2). To make thin lines, use the ridge of the pastel chalk. For wider lines, or to fill in a design, use the flat edge or place the chalk on its side and drag it across the surface. Layers of color can be applied one on top of another, and blended or left plain.
- 3). To soften a line or blend colors, you can use the tip of your finger, a small eye make-up sponge, a styrofoam peanut or a clean and dry, soft paintbrush. Use the tissue under your hand to keep from smudging the chalk everywhere.
- 4). Should chalk crumbs appear on the surface, shake the paper so the dust will fall away. Try not to brush any crumbs or dust them away with your hands.
- 5). When finished with the drawing, take it outside or into a well ventilated area and lightly spray a few coats of fixative onto the sandpaper. It will help to keep the chalk in place and protect it.
