- 1). Draw a cross, giving each end (top, bottom and both ends of the horizontal bar) a sharp, angled appearance. Draw the ends of the cross as sharp points. Draw lines down the centers of the vertical and horizontal sections. Later you will shade around these lines to add depth.
- 2). Draw a diamond shape on each end of the vertical section of the cross. Add a circle around each of these. Add smaller diamond shapes along the mid-section of the cross to resemble jewels. Alternatively, draw small circles or squares to represent other types of jewels.
- 3). Sketch a design on the surface of your cross. This is where your imagination can go wild, as there are no rules about what to draw. Think of the lines as engravings in the cross. Try a variety of straight and curved lines or geometric shapes to give your drawing the intricate design characteristics of real Gothic crosses.
- 4). Shade your drawing to give it depth. Thicken the lines of your design and add shading to the center lines. Shade the entire cross with angled pencil strokes until the pencil strokes overlap and completely color the cross. Use colored pencils for the jewels. Dark, jewel-toned colors such as red, blue and green work well. Smudge the pencil shading with your fingers to remove some of the hard lines and create a shiny texture.
