- 1). Purchase one, or a set, of textured grip covers for your reel handle. Grip covers are available from sporting goods, tackle and some big box stores and provide a secure surface for your fingers when reeling in a big fish. Simply slip the grip cover on the grip of your spinning reel or both grips of your casting reel.
- 2). Replace the handle on your baitcast reel with a specially designed replacement handle that is over sized and provides greater leverage. Take the old handle off your old reel by first locating the center of the handle along with the retaining cap and screw. Remove the screw with a Phillips screwdriver and pull the cap straight away from the handle.
- 3). Loosen and remove the brass retaining nut that holds the handle in place on the threaded handle post. Use pliers or a small wrench. Turn the nut to the left, or counterclockwise, and remove the handle. Place the upgrade replacement handle on the handle post, thread on the nut and tight it securely but do not over tighten. Place the retaining cap on the center of the upgrade reel handle and attach it with the Phillips head screw.
- 4). Obtain an upgrade replacement spool for your spinning or baitcast reel. Contact the reel manufacturer of place of purchase for upgrade spools. Open the side access of a baitcast reel or loosen and remove the drag control on a spinning reel. Pull the old spool from the body of the reel.
- 5). Slide the upgrade replacement spool into the body of a casting reel or onto the spool post of a spinning reel. Close the side access on the casting reel and thread the drag control back onto the spool post until it is secure.
