How to Build an Outdoor Antenna Yourself

    • 1). Place the steel mesh on a work surface with the short end facing you. Place the PVC pipe vertically on the steel mesh. Measure four inches from the top end of the PVC pipe. Place the top end of the steel mesh at the 4-inch mark underneath the PVC pipe. Apply bonding glue to the top of the PVC pipe. Put a PVC cap on the top of the PVC pipe. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 2). Measure 4 inches up from the bottom end of the steel mesh. Make a dot on the PVC pipe at the 4-inch mark. Slide the "T" connector up the PVC pipe to the dot. Orient the "T" of the "T" connector so that it is facing outwards. Apply bonding glue around the "T" connector to cement it to the PVC pipe. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 3). Turn the steel mesh over. Measure down 6 inches from the top of the steel mesh. Measure up 6 inches from the bottom of the steel mesh. Make a dot at the 6-inch marks at the top and bottom of the steel mesh.

    • 4). Drill a hole through each of the two dots with the portable drill. Put a bolt through each of the two holes in the steel mesh and through the PVC pipe. Put a nut on the end of each of the two 6-inch bolts on the other side of the PVC pipe. Screw the nuts onto the bolts with your fingers. Tighten the nuts with the pliers.

    • 5). Turn the steel mesh over. Apply bonding glue to one end of the 3-foot PVC pipe. Put a PVC cap on the end of the 3-foot PVC pipe that has the bonding glue on it. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 6). Place the PVC elbow pipe into the "T" connector with the open end facing up. Apply bonding glue around the "T" connector to cement the PVC elbow pipe in place. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 7). Place the 3-foot PVC pipe horizontally on a work surface with the end that has the PVC cap on the left side. Measure 4 inches in from the left side of the PVC pipe. Measure 1 foot in from the right side of the PVC pipe. Make a dot at the two measurements.

    • 8). Cut eight lengths of 6-inch copper wire with the wire cutters. Bend each length of copper wire at the middle with the pliers to form a "V" shape.

    • 9). Place a metal plate horizontally on a work surface. Measure 1/2 inch in and 1 inch down from each side of the metal plate. Make a dot with the grease pencil at the 1/2 inch mark. Measure 1 inch down from the dot on both sides.

    • 10

Partially screw a machine screw into each of the four dots on the metal block with the electric screwdriver. Put the "V" of a bent copper wire around each of the two machine screws on the left side of the metal plate.

    • 11

Orient the two ends of the copper wire towards the left side. Repeat this procedure with the two machine screws and two copper wires on the right side of the metal plate, only orient the two ends of the copper wires towards the right side.

    • 12

Screw the four machine screws into the metal plate with the electric screwdriver. Repeat this entire procedure with the other metal plate.

    • 13

Place a metal plate on each of the two dots on the 3-foot PVC pipe so that the ends of the copper wires are facing up and down. Screw the metal plates into the dots with the machine screws using the electric screwdriver.

    • 14

Cut two 14-inch lengths of copper wire with the wire cutters. Line up one of the copper wires with the top left "V" on the metal plate at the left side. Line up the other copper wire with the bottom left "V" on the metal plate at the left side.

    • 15

Solder the copper wires where they meet the "V." Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 16

Solder the copper wires where they meet the "V" to the right of the one just soldered. Solder the copper wires where they meet the two "V's" on the metal plate to the right of the metal plate that has just been soldered.

    • 17

Place the end of the 3-foot PVC pipe that doesn't have the PVC cap into the end of the "T" connector. Apply bonding glue around the "T" connector to cement the PVC pipe in place. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 18

Solder one of the free ends of the copper wire to one of the two contacts on the 75 ohm matching transformer. Let the solder cool for a minute. Solder the free end of the other copper wire to the other contact on the 75 ohm matching transformer. Let the solder cool for a minute.

    • 19

Solder the back of the 75 ohm matching transformer to the bottom of the PVC pipe just above where it meets the PVC elbow pipe. Let the solder cool for a minute. Apply bonding glue around the 75 ohm matching transformer. Let the bonding glue set for three hours.

    • 20

Plug one end of the coaxial cable into the 75 ohm matching transformer. Stand the outdoor antenna you have made in the location chosen for it.

    • 21

Bend the steel mesh away from the PVC pipe until it maintains a 30-degree bend. Trail the coaxial cable into the house and screw the free end into the coax input of the TV.
