- Avoid frequent use of ammonia- or vinegar-based solutions, which are good for occasional use on tough stains but will wear out the laminate if used regularly. For routine weekly cleaning, milder is better. Mix two tablespoons of regular baby shampoo in a gallon bucket of warm water. Mix the solution gently to avoid creating a lot of suds. Mop with a well-wrung mop, and follow up with a dry mop to prevent the liquid from sitting on the floor.
- For occasional deep cleaning between regular cleanings (once a month or less), make a vinegar-based solution. The acid in the vinegar acts as a mild stripper that will clean up grime, wax-cleaner buildup and other problems. Mix 2 cups of white vinegar with 2 cups of warm water. Add 1 cup of lemon juice to help minimize the vinegar odor and 1/4 cup of dish soap. Don't shake or vigorously stir the mixture, but swirl it gently to dissolve all of it. Mop as usual and wring out the mop well. Go over the floor with a dry mop afterward.
- Ammonia-based window cleaner is good for spot cleaning laminate floors, though not at full strength. Take a half-full bottle of window cleaner, and fill the other half with very hot water. Don't shake it up but swirl gently. Spray the mixture directly onto the problem areas, let it sit for a minute and wipe it up with a very well-wrung sponge. Because of the hot water and fast-evaporating ammonia, the solution will dry quickly and doesn't have to be rinsed.
