- 1). Sketch out your subject. Use the pencil and draw lightly, directly onto your canvas.
- 2). Mix up a range of colors using your primaries on your palette. Use a range of about eight colors between the two primaries. Mix about five grays as well if you are using black and white.
- 3). Begin applying thinned paint to the canvas. Use a lot of medium or water at first (depending on if you are painting an oil or acrylic painting). Pick the color on the palette that most closely matches the color of your subject. You won't have a lot of choices, so the job is simplified.
- 4). Continue applying paint, making it gradually heavier. Blend adjacent areas gently using the brush to create gradients.
- 5). Finish the painting with the very heaviest paint. You can use paint without any medium at this point, if you want, for rich textures. The paint can even be applied using the palette knife for a rugged surface.
