The question of whether or not and how much appearance matters when attracting women is something that even the most experienced and successful pick up artists will debate over. Most men will assume though, that the clothes make the man, and if they don't have the right appearance, they are not going to get the girl. And this is true to some extent, but the thing is, a lot of guys put a little too much stock into this.
I'll give you an example of why it does matter to some extent:
Okay, let's say that you are scoping out a total emo hottie and she looks fantastic to you. She has the whole emo look down pat and it's something that you are digging on right now. However, you are dressed like a business man, as you are on your lunch break. So, you have the whole clean cut, suit and tie look going for you. In this situation, that look might be enough to turn her off.
Some women, when they are deep into a certain style, they really are only attracted to guys that are of the same style. That does not mean that you don't have a chance at all with her, it just means that you would have a much better shot if you were kind of pulling off a similar look to her. It all boils down to the fact that people tend to be drawn to other people that are "like them."
Of course, there are examples of this not being much of a factor, either, so it's not really a make or break kind of thing. It's just that you kind of raise the odds of having an instant sense of rapport with a woman if you are in sync with her style.

See, just because you don't fit a certain standard does not mean that you cannot make a woman feel attraction. You might not have the six pack, the Ed Hardy shirt, or the skinny jeans on, but you can still get a pretty girl, if you display alpha male qualities and don't act like a total wuss when you approach her.
The main point is, there are times when having the right appearance will make things a LOT easier, and it will build an instant feeling of rapport, and there are times when it really does not matter at all. Just don't get hung up on your looks being too much of a factor, because, well, isn't that a girlie thing to do?
