Acrylic Concrete Stain vs. Latex Conrete Stain

    Masonry Staining

    • Concrete is a porous masonry material that absorbs water. Without proper sealing, it can retain dirt, discolor and become brittle wearing over time. Concrete should be properly cured prior to sealing or staining. Curing maintains a moisture balance in the raw concrete. When done properly, it increases the durability of the foundation. Sealing concrete before it cures stifles the curing process. Wait at least 90 days before using a stain on fresh concrete.

    Acrylic and Latex

    • Both acrylic and latex descriptors in the stain label refer to the waterproofing component of the stain. While not every latex concrete stain has acrylic, acrylic concrete stains are considered acrylic latex. The acrylic is the binder, securing the paint to the porous concrete for adhesion. Latex may use other adhesive binders instead of acrylic that serve the same purpose.

    Quality

    • Concrete stains with acrylic is considered a higher quality stain than other latex-based stains. Acrylic seeps into the pores and binds, altering the color from deep within the concrete. This prevents flaking and chipping of color, promoting a longer lasting finish. Many acrylics also withstand sun exposure very well, reducing the need to refinish outdoor concrete floors as frequently.

    Applicaiton

    • The concrete staining process is the same whether you are using an acrylic latex or other latex stain. It isn't advisable to roll or brush the stain on since this can leave stroke marks and other imbalances. A sprayer is ideal for a consistent application, though you can also use a towel or sponge to wipe the stain on in small circular sections. Stains come in a variety of colors, allowing you to make patterns and mark pathways or create unique designs.
