- 1). Attempt to clean the stain from the wall. Do so by applying a car parts lubricant to the wall. Cover the entire surface of the stain. Wearing gloves, rub the lubricant into the wallpaper with a soft cloth. Rinse the lubricant off with water. If the stain persists, pour one tsp. of liquid dish soap into one cup of warm water and mix together. Dip a sponge into the solution and rub the stain. If the stain is still present, use something to cover its appearance.
- 2). Place a picture or clock over top of the stain. As long as the stain occurs in an area in which a picture or clock would typically occupy, guests will likely be none the wiser of the stain. For instance, if the stain appears low on the wall, a picture or clock placed there wouldn't make much sense.
- 3). Adhere wallpaper border over top of the stain. Placing border over the wallpaper can add style and decoration to the room, as well as cover the stain. Use this technique if the stain appears in areas in which border typically would be applied, such as at the top of the wall or ¼ of the way up. Choose border that matches or complements the existing wallpaper.
- 4). Affix a wallpaper cutout over the stain. Wallpaper cutouts are small pieces of wallpaper that can be adhered to most surfaces. Choose a cutout that matches or complements the existing wallpaper to avoid any clashing.
- 5). Remove the strip of wallpaper that is stained and replace it with a cleaner strip. This technique may be challenging as you might damage the paper around it during removal. In addition, if the paper on the wall is old, it may have turned a darker color due to its age. Finding a new piece of paper that matches the color and pattern may be difficult to do.
