- 1). Disconnect the power cord from the computer and all peripherals. Locate the release switch on the side panel of the case or locate holding screws on the rear of the computer case. Your computer case may vary in how the case panels are removed. Remove the holding screws if applicable.

Locate an available PCI slot on the computer's motherboard. - 3). Remove the holding screw directly behind the PCI slot on the rear of the computer case. Slide out the metal cover that covers the opening in the computer case that lines up with the PCI slot.
- 4). Grasp the PCI serial port card with the edge filled with gold or silver connection lines facing the PCI slot.
- 5). Line up the edge of the card with the slot. Make sure any slits in the edge of the card line up with raised plastic protrusions on the PCI slot.
- 6). Push the PCI card into place until the card clicks into place. If the card will not slide in, look for small plastic clips on either side of the slot. Use your thumb and index finger of one hand to push these clips outward while pushing the card into the slot. The clips will lock into place when the card is fully inserted.
- 7). Replace the one holding screw to secure the card in place. Verify that the serial port connection is visible and accessible through the rear of the computer. Replace the case panel and any cover screws.
- 8). Reconnect all connections and turn the computer on. If a prompt appears saying that new hardware has been detected, follow the on-screen prompts to search for and install drivers. If the card came with a CD of drivers, insert the CD when prompted. Restart the computer if prompted.
