- 1). Open your computer's default Internet browser (such as Google Chrome, Mozilla FireFox, or Internet Explorer) and visit the website you plan on entering any personal data or payment information into.
- 2). Browse to the section of the website that requires input of your name, address or payment data. Near the top of your browser, just left of the website's URL (your address bar) you will see a "padlock" icon. If this padlock icon is open, the website is not secure with an SSL certificate (Secure Sockets Layer, which encrypts your data to better protect it and keep it safe). If the padlock next to the URL address bar is closed, it is "locked" and the website is secured with an SSL certificate.
- 3). Open a new tab or a new window within your web browser. Verify and confirm the website's SSL certificate is working properly by visiting a free SSL checking website service, such as SSL Shopper or Digi Cert (see Resources).
- 4). Enter the website address you are using to enter in your personal information on the SSL-checking website service and press "Enter" to check and verify if the website is protected with an SSL certificate. The SSL checker will prompt you with the results of its findings after a few seconds to a few minutes. If the website is secure with an SSL certificate, you have successfully verified the website for entering your data and information safely.
