- 1). Scrape up as much of the oil as possible with a butter knife or spoon. Do this slowly and carefully so you don't make the spot worse.
- 2). Sprinkle a liberal coating of cornstarch, baby powder or baking soda onto the oil spot. Leave it there for 15 minutes to absorb the stain. Vacuum up the powder.
- 3). Dampen a white rag with dry cleaning solvent. Sponge the oil spot with the solvent. Blot with a clean, white rag to absorb the liquid. Alternate sponging the spot with dry cleaning solvent, then blotting up the liquid until no more oil transfers from the carpet to the rag.
- 4). Mix 2 cups of warm water, 1 tbsp. of vinegar and 1 tbsp. of bleach-free dish soap into a bowl if the oil spot is still there. Sponge the mixture onto the stain with a clean, white rag, and blot up the moisture with another clean, white rag. Alternate sponging on the cleaning mixture and blotting up the liquid until the oil spot is gone.
- 5). Rinse the carpet with a clean rag and cold water. Blot with a dry rag to get any remaining moisture out of the carpet.
