- 1). Disconnect the battery ground cable and lay it aside, ensuring that it does not touch metal. Loosen the tensioners for the accessory belts, push them away from the belts, then lift the belts off the pulleys. Remove the V-belt tensioner, if the your model year Jetta uses a V-belt.
- 2). Remove the crankshaft pulley bolts, then pull the pulley off the snout of the crankshaft. Remove the water pump pulley and both timing belt covers using the appropriate sockets. Temporarily reinstall the crankshaft pulley.
- 3). Turn the crankshaft clockwise until the timing marks on the camshaft sprocket and the intermediate sprocket line up. The timing mark on the intermediate sprocket is at the 9 o’clock position. The line on the sprocket lines up with the notch on the crankshaft pulley. The timing mark on the camshaft is at the 12 o’clock position. The dot on the camshaft sprocket lines up with the dot on the head. Remove the crankshaft pulley again.
- 4). Loosen the tensioner nut. Turn the tensioner counterclockwise, releasing tension on the belt. Lift the timing belt off the sprockets. Make sure the timing mark on the camshaft sprocket is still lined up.
- 5). Install the timing belt around the crankshaft sprocket and the intermediate shaft sprocket. Temporarily install the crankshaft pulley. Make sure all the timing marks still line up. Bring the timing belt up over the top of the camshaft sprocket, keeping hand tension between on the belt between the crankshaft sprocket, intermediate sprocket and camshaft sprocket. Bring the belt down behind the tensioner pulley.
- 6). Turn the tensioner clockwise, using the tensioner wrench, until the timing belt can be twisted 90 degrees between the intermediate sprocket and the camshaft sprocket. Tighten the tensioner bolt to 33 foot-pounds of torque.
- 7). Turn the crankshaft two turns clockwise until the timing marks line up again. Check the tension on the timing belt by twisting it 90 degrees between the intermediate sprocket and the camshaft sprocket. If it turns more or less than that, repeat the tensioning process from Step 6. Remove the crankshaft pulley.
- 8). Install the timing belt covers. Tighten the bolts to 7 foot-pounds of torque. Install the crankshaft pulley. Tighten the bolts to 15 foot-pounds of torque. Install the rest of the parts in reverse order of removal. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 15 foot-pounds of torque.
