- Candle wax stains can be tricky to remove.candle image by goce risteski from Fotolia.com
A nice romantic evening or a quiet moment of reflection often seems to require the use of candles. It is easy to forget one is burning, however, leaving it to melt all over the counter or carpet. Melted wax from a recently blown-out candle can also spill onto a tabletop or onto the floor. Though it may be easy to make a mess with candle wax, cleaning it up is not as difficult as you may think with a few cleaning tricks. - Use a flat tool such as a paint scraper or plastic knife to remove wax from hard, scratch-resistant surfaces. It is important not to use a scraper on wood or painted surfaces as a scraper may remove paint in the process.
- A regular, household iron works well to remove wax from carpet. Remove large chunks of wax from the surface by hand and then cover the rest of the spilled wax with a brown paper bag, baking paper or paper towels. Place a warm iron onto the paper bag and run the iron slowly across to heat the wax underneath. The paper will absorb the wax as it liquefies.
- There are several ways to clean a stain left by spilled wax on fabric. Put a bit of commercial fabric or upholstery cleaner on a clean sponge and dab the stain trying to remove as much of it as possible. Rinse the area with water. Use laundry detergent for wax stains on clothing. You can also use hot water and bleach to remove the stain. For stubborn wax stains, mix together one part rubbing alcohol and two parts of water and rub it on the surface. Rinse with water. You can also mix diluted hand-washing soap with a few drops of ammonia to get rid of the stain.
