- 1). Keep a log of the calorie content of everything you consume throughout the day. Keeping a running total of your calorie consumption can help you make sure you are not eating more than the 700-calorie-a-day limit. To more accurately assess your calorie intake, include the caloric count for condiments and sauces as well. Calories from liquids and sauces can add up quickly and are often overlooked.
- 2). Substitute water for soft drinks and juices. Because 20 percent of your daily intake is obtained through the foods you eat, you must hydrate yourself more when cutting down on calorie-filled foods. If you are consuming 700 calories or less a day, the daily water you obtain from foods will be cut in half. As a result, on top of the recommended intake of water (64 oz. daily), you must drink two extra cups to account for the fluid loss and to prevent dehydration.
- 3). Eat whole-grain and other nutrient-dense foods. Eating 700 calories or less a day could strip you of the necessary nutrients you need to function. To prevent a depletion of energy, eat fruits and vegetables that are low in calories but rich in vitamins and minerals. Whole-grain foods such as bread and crackers will help satisfy your hunger and replenish your nutrients and are lower in calories than snack foods such as chips and other foods that contain a lot of saturated fat.
