- 1). Wipe up any remaining urine with dry rags. If the urine is in a carpet, press absorbent towels onto it until no more moisture comes out.
- 2). Wash the area with plain water. If you are working on carpet, consider using a wet-dry vac. This will flush water into a carpet and suck it back out. Once you wash the area, dry it as thoroughly as possible. It is particularly important to flush the area if the urine is old. This will dilute the urine and remove any chemicals that were previously used on the stain.
- 3). Spray an enzyme-based cleaner on the stain. These cleaners are available for purchase at a pet supply store. They consume the proteins in bodily fluids and are the most effective cleaner for removing urine odors. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the product. You need to rinse some cleaners, but you leave others on the stain.
